Sandwich, as we understand it nowadays, was named in the 18th century, after the 4th Earl of Sandwich, a historic town on the River Stour, at the south east coast of England. The Lord of Sandwich didn’t want to leave the gambling table during his long playing day and for this reason he asked his servants to bring him two slices of bread with a slice of meat in between. The gambling friends of Earl John Montagu getting hungry in seeing their friend enjoying his meal, asked the servants to be served the same dish calling it sandwich as the town’s name. And so, the sandwich was born.
