Spaghetti Harvest 1957

Did you know that Spaghetti could be planted and cultivated? In the 1950s, when Spaghetti was still considered an exotic dish, in northern Europe, Charles de Jaeger produced for the BBC an astonishing documentary on the cultivation and harvest season of Spaghetti in the southern part of Switzerland. With this documentary Charles tried to introduce the strong cultural bond between Spaghetti and their lovers.

Spaghetti then was strictly Italian and was considered quite complicated to eat for people that didn’t grow with it. Nowadays Spaghetti is a dish spread all over the world and has become part of everyone’s diet regardless of our geographical and cultural background. The oldest recorded document about Spaghetti is dated in the 15th century, in an illustration of Tacuinum Sanitatis, a Latin translation of the Arabic work Taqwim al-sihha by Ibn Butlan, where during his journey in Sicily, he documented the production of thin long strings, made out of dough.

Define yourself through bread making

Date: 26th of February 2011

Place: Iaspis, Konstnärsnämnden, Studio 7, Maria Skolgata 83, Stockholm

Bread is one of the most common foods in the world, produced for many thousands of years, and has conditioned the growth of our civilization and the development of our culture. Like a plant developing and adapting to weather conditions, bread has evolved with various ingredients, shapes, methods of preparation and tastes, all of which are completely related to the place and conditions of production.

Around the world, bread is one… of the most important foods, a staple, which accompanies our dishes and our lives.

Participants are asked to compare experiences about bread and to translate them with different ingredients into a personal and unique bread.
Each person will introduce and share the produced bread with everyone, as each one shares his or her own history.

The participants will be guided through the workshop and the process of self-bread-portrait, helped by a variety of spices, nuts, olive oil, butter, flour, honey and more.

Mixing, shaping and cooking will give different styles to the same ingredients and a unique and personal taste to each bread.

Program:

12:00 doors open

12:30 presentation of the participants and discussion on bread experiences

13:00 bread making: each participant will create his/her own bread from a variety of ingredients

14:00 Talk – Bread and the other – with Jonatan Habib Engqvist

15:00 bread is ready, everyone will introduce his/her bread and share it in a collective dinner

16:00 End

An evening on giving, learning, making, sharing…

Date: 26th of November 2010

Place: Tent, Witte de With 50, Rotterdam

Pasta is a generic and universal term for foods made from unleavened dough, from flour and water, sometimes mixed with other ingredients changing the taste and the colour of the pasta such as eggs and vegetables, usually served with sauce.

La Giostra is a spaghetti “contaste” [con-taste: shared tasting experience] in which, participants in small groups will create their special pasta dishes, starting from the creation of the pasta dough and using the combination of various recipes and ingredients.

The groups are free to use the ingredients the best way they think and in the most suitable way for the realization of their ideas.

The evening of the 26th will be divided in two events:

– one from 19:00 until 21:00 and

– the other one from 21:00 until 23:00.

The event will sprint at the music’s rhythm of Tosi Andrea, La Cicogna Nera.

on Ubuntu

I am because You are.

A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed. [Archbishop Desmond Tutu 1999]
Louw (1998) suggests that the concept of ubuntu defines the individual in their several relationships with others, and stresses the importance of ubuntu as a religious concept. He states that while the Zulu maxim umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu (“a person is a person through (other) persons”) may have no apparent religious connotations in the context of Western society, in an African context it suggests that the person one is to become by behaving with humanity is an ancestor worthy of respect or veneration. Those who uphold the principle of ubuntu throughout their lives will, in death, achieve a unity with those still living.
A traveler through a country would stop at a village and he didn’t have to ask for food or for water. Once he stops, the people give him food, entertain him. That is one aspect of Ubuntu but it will have various aspects. Ubuntu does not mean that people should not enrich themselves. The question therefore is: Are you going to do so in order to enable the community around you to be able to improve? [Nelson Mandela]

Cannibalism

Cannibalism in Brazil in 1557 as described by Hans Staden (Wikipedia)

Cannibalism in Brazil in 1557 as described by Hans Staden (Wikipedia)

Cannibalism features in many mythologies, and is most often attributed to evil characters or as extreme retribution for something wrong. A number of stories in Greek mythology involve cannibalism, in particular cannibalism of close family members, for example the stories of Thyestes, Tereus and especially Cronus, who was Saturn in the Roman pantheon. In the Christian tradition, cannibalism is believed to be undertaken (in some cases symbolically) in the form of communion and the Eucharist. In some tribes cannibalism was a way to respect the dead, to keep them inside the survivors body so that after their death, they would continue to live inside their progony bodies.
